Actual test how to reading

Some contend that parents today understand children better than parents in the past. Others assert that parents today do not understand children as well as parents in the past. If asked, both groups would present compelling reasons to substantiate their assertions. For the following reasons, I believe that parents in the past understood children better than parents in our generation. First, today parents are too busy to spend time with children; second, children today are occupied with extracurricular activities.

First, parents today work many hours, so their time with children is very limited. Nowadays, it is not unusual that both parents have full time jobs. For example, both of my parents graduated good universities, hit good jobs with high salaries, and have been promoted to managers in their companies. Unfortunately, they literally work themselves to death and spend very little time with my brother and me. They usually come home around midnight and leave the house before six in the morning. Often they are on business trips; my brother and I rarely see my parents.

Second, children today are occupied with activities outside the house. Most children are busy in participating in extracurricular activities after school. Take my brother for example; he goes to a cramming school on weekdays and takes piano and swimming lessons on weekends. He comes home at ten p.m. every night, takes a bath and goes to bed. He spends almost no time with our parents. My grandfather always complains that my brother should quit some of his activities outside the house.

It is true that parents today have technological means to communicate with children such as the internet and cell-phones. However, real physical contacts with children are far more important than online conversations. I would say one hug is worth 1000 telephone calls. In conclusion, first, today parents work hard so that they spend little time with children; second, children today are overwhelmed by extracurricular activities. For these reasons, in my opinion, parents in the past know about their children much better than parents in the modern world. My grandfather believes that his relation with his children was much closer than the relationship between my parents and me; both parents and children had much time to spend together in the past. Some contend that learning through TV is better than through reading books. Others assert that reading books are more useful than watching TV. If asked, both groups would present their assertions to corroborate their perspectives. For the following reasons, in my opinion, learning by TV is much more effective than reading books. First, one can learn a great deal of information in a short time on TV; second, it is more enjoyable to learn from TV.

First, one can obtain more information in a brief time period on TV. The other day, I was watching a documentary program on the history of the universe. This program explained very difficult concepts such as black holes, worm holes, big bang, and the theories of relativities using many illustrations and interviews with experts. If I tried to learn the same amount of information from books, it would take forever. In addition, it would be very difficult to grasp those scientific ideas from books. This example demonstrates that one can learn well summarized information on TV.

Second, it is more enjoyable to learn from TV. The TV utilizes all kinds of techniques to make our learning more interesting. For example, I was watching a program called the mystery of the UFO. The program included pictures of various types of unidentified objects, interviews of eyewitnesses, and a story of a person kidnapped by an UFO. I had a very enjoyable time watching this program. Had I read books to get the same information, it would have been a very boring experience without such additional features of TV such as pictures, interviews, stories, and three dimensional illustrations.

It is true that one may be able get more reliable information from books. However, if we are careful enough, one can obtain reliable information from TV as well. In conclusion, first, one can learn a great deal of information in a short time on TV; second, it is more enjoyable to learn from TV. TV is an invaluable tool in the modern life and, I cannot imagine what our lives would be like without TV. (346 words)

Day 13

When students work together on a project, they learn much more effectively than when they do the project alone.

Some contend that one can learn more effectively in a group. Others argue that one can learn effectively alone without others. If asked, both groups would present compelling arguments to corroborate their assertions. For the following reasons, I believe that one can learn more effectively in a group. First, as one’s knowledge is limited, one can learn from others; second, one can learn interpersonal skills in a group.

First, as our experience and knowledge are limited, chances are we need the assistance of others in a project. I was on a science project in high school. The assignment of our group was selecting a science topic, conducting an experiment, and summarizing the result in a project report. I was assigned to making graphs of the experimental results. Unfortunately, my knowledge of using Excel functions to draw graphs was rather limited. I struggled for two days and finally asked other members of the team for assistance. One guy gave me a quick training course of the Excel, which solved all my problems of graphing. This example demonstrates how you can proceed with a project more effectively by learning from others.

Second, one can learn interpersonal skills in a project, which is one of the most important skills required when one works in the corporate environment. I am a first year mechanical engineer in a car manufacturing company. I was assigned to a project team to develop a new hybrid car. The first and the most important thing I learned was that I needed to deal with people internally and externally. I needed to learn how to interact with my boss, colleagues internally and customers and suppliers externally. Knowing people and letting others know me were instrumental to performing my job. This example illustrates that one can learn how to be associated with others in a group situation.

It is true that if you are fully familiar with the subject matter, you may feel comfortable to do everything on you own. However, when the nature of a project becomes more complicated, you may encounter situations where you need assistance from others. First, as one’s knowledge is limited, one can learn from others; second, one can learn interpersonal skills in a group. For these reasons, my strong contention is that one can learn more efficiently and effectively with others in a group. This lends truth to the adage in my language that three heads are better than one in handling a problem. (410 words)

Day 12

Moving to different countries or towns is not good because of losing old friends.

Some argue that moving to different countries or towns is not recommendable because of losing old friends. Others assert that moving to others locations will not result in losing old friends. If asked, both groups would present compelling arguments to corroborate their stances. For the following reasons, I believe that being transferred to different countries and towns has a risk of losing old friends as well as one’s own family. First, out of sight, out of mind; second, it is more costly to maintain the relationship.

First, it is very difficult to maintain a relationship unless we physical see each other. Physical contacts are actually very conductive to establishing and maintaining a relationship. I had a girlfriend in my high schooldays, but my father’s transfer to another location forced me to leave the town. My girlfriend and I tried very hard to maintain the relationship by frequent telephones and letters, but in the end we gave up on our relationship. We realized that being able to see, kiss, and hug each other was more important than we initially thought. This example demonstrates that being able to physically see and touch each other is conducive to retaining a relationship.

Second, maintaining a long-distance relation is very costly. Travelling back and force and frequent telephone calls amount to a great sum of money. My uncle is a married man and was transferred to another office 500 miles from his house. He had to go to the new location alone, leaving his family at home because his children did not want to change schools. He had to travel a long distance to see his family every weekend, which cost him a fortune. This example illustrates a heavy financial burden of maintaining a long-distance relationship.

It is true that we can maintain friendship with old friends by using modern technologies such as e-mails, Facebook, and Skype. However, as I stated above, actual physical contacts are more instrumental to maintaining our relationships. For the following reasons, I believe that being transferred to different countries and towns may result in losing old friends as well as one’s own family. First, out of sight, out of mind; second, it is expensive to maintain the relationship. This does not lend truth to the adage that absence makes our heart grow fonder. (382 words)

Day 11

People should work quickly and risk making mistakes, instead of working slowly and making sure that everything is correct.

Some contend that people should work quickly and risk making mistakes. Others assert that people should work slowly to eliminate mistakes. If asked, both groups would present compelling arguments to corroborate their stances. First, artists create their pieces very carefully and slowly to avoid any imperfections; second, writing an English essay requires a slow and careful process to avoid errors. For these reasons, I believe that people should work slowly to eliminate mistakes.

First, artists create their pieces very carefully and slowly to avoid any errors. Most artists are perfectionists and they do not tolerate any errors; they are inclined to proceed very slowly with their art works. My friend is a sculptor of human figures. It takes almost six months to complete a figure and one single mistake would undermine the figure and he has to start all over again. This example demonstrates that artists perform very meticulously to avoid making mistakes.

Second, writing an English essay requires a slow and careful process to avoid errors. My strategy when writing a TOEFL writing independent essay, is writing a relatively short essay, say, 350 words so that I can avoid making many typing errors and other grammatical errors. This tactics has paid off and I have been getting good scores on my essays. In contrast, my friend writes a 600 word essay with many mistakes, resulting in poor grades. This example illustrates that working slowly is a better strategy to eliminate many errors.

It is true that in a manufacturing plant where a large number of identical items are produced, people should work faster to increase the productivity. However, this strategy does not work for producing a single piece of art work. First, artists create their pieces very carefully and slowly to avoid any imperfections; second, writing an English essay requires a slow and careful process to avoid errors. For these reasons, I believe that people should work slowly to eliminate mistakes. This lends truth to the adage in my language that a slow and steady man wins the race. (342 words)

Day 10

As society progresses, advice from grandparents to children is not as useful as it was in the past.

Some argue that advice from grandparents to children is not as useful as it was in the past. Others assert that their advice is as valid as it was in the past. If asked, both groups would present compelling assertions to corroborate their stances. My grandfather passed away when I was young. When he was alive, he told me many interesting and horrible war stories based on his personal experience. He gave me two pieces of advice: first, do not repeat the war again; second, do not throw away your toys. These suggestions are still very much valid today, which introduces my contention that advice from grandparents to children is as useful as it was in the past.

His first advice was not to repeat the war. He was 5 years old when the war was over. His town was completely destroyed by enemy airplanes that dropped bombs and killed tens of thousands of people. His uncle, aunt, two sisters were among the victims of the war. He wished that this had been just a dream, but it was unfortunately very much real. His wish today is never ever repeat the same mistake of having another war. This is a very valid advice that is applicable to any generations now and in the future. This example demonstrates that the tragedy of war shall not be repeated.

His second advice was not to throw away things you have until you are sure that they are not repairable. After the war, he walked around the devastated town every day hoping to find something. It was very tough time for him; he just survived one day at a time. He found a toy which was badly damaged, but he managed to repair it and played with it for the next ten years. So, whenever he sees someone throw away an old toy, he feels that it can be repaired. This example illustrates that we should preserve our limited natural resources.

It is true that some suggestions from grandparents may not be totally applicable to the present. For example, they often tell us to follow the instructions of senior people, especially your parents under any circumstances. This advice may not be true entirely today, but we should still respect those seniors who have more experience. My grandfather provided me with two pieces of advice: first, do not repeat the war again; second, do not throw away your belongings. These suggestions are still very much valid today, which leads to my conclusion that advice from grandparents to children is as useful as it was in the past. (431 words)

Actual test how to reading
