Day 5

People who do not accept criticism from others cannot be successful in group work.

Some contend that people who do not accept criticisms from others cannot succeed in group work. Others argue that people do not have to listen to others. If asked, both groups would present compelling reasons to substantiate their stances. For the following reasons, I believe that people should accept criticisms to become a successful team member. First, in a team sport environment, one needs to listen to criticisms to improve one’s skills, so that one can contribute to the success of the team; second, in a corporate situation, one should accept criticisms from others.

First of all, in a team sport environment, one needs to listen to criticisms to improve your skills, so that one can contribute to the success of the team. When you are involved in a team sport such as baseball, football, or basketball, accepting suggestions and criticisms from your coaches and your team mates is the only way for you to improve your skills and capabilities. In high school, I belonged to a volleyball team and in my senior year, I was nominated as the captain of the team. When our team wins, normally nobody complains, whereas when we lose, tons of criticisms come from our coaches and team mates. Some criticisms were targeted to individual members, and others were forwarded to me as the captain. I had to listen to every single of those suggestions, because in a team sport, learning from mistakes is the primary way to make improvements as a team. This example demonstrates the importance of listening to others in a team sport.

By the same token, in a corporate situation, one should accept criticisms from others. Companies make profits when every employee of the company accepts internal and external criticisms in the pursuit of continued improvements. I am an engineer working for a car manufacturing company. Last year I was assigned to a project team to develop a new hybrid car. I have been exposed to a constant influx of suggestions and criticisms from our customers, other departments, my senior and junior team members. There has been no single day without hearing criticisms from others. My attitude towards to those criticisms is that people criticize me because they believe I can improve. If they gave up on me, they would stop complaining to me. This example illustrates how critical that one has to listen to others in a corporate scenario.

Some may contend that when one receives unfounded criticisms, one does not have to accept it. However, I refute this because often unfounded criticisms stem from misunderstanding between two parties. In the least, one should make efforts to communicate with others to clear the misunderstanding. First, in a team sport environment, one needs to listen to criticisms to improve your skills; second, in a corporate situation, one should accept criticisms from others. For these reasons, I conclude that people who do not accept criticism from others cannot be successful in group work. It lends truth to the adage in my language that those who have good ears to listen to others will meet a fortune. (524 words)
