Usher Day 3

Usher Writing

It is important to choose friends who have fun with you, than to choose friends who can help you when you need them.

Some argue that it is more important to choose friends who have fun with you. Others contend that you should select friends who can help you when you are in trouble. Both groups would present compelling arguments to substantiate their assertions. For the following reasons, I believe that you should select friends who can extend hands when you are in turmoil. First, friends who help you financially when you are in troubling situations are real friends; second, those friends who can support you emotionally are also true friends.

First, those friends who are willing to help you financially when you encounter troubles are real friends. In many cases, when you are in trouble, many of your so-to-speak friends turn their back. For example, a few years ago, my company went bankrupt and laid off all the employees including me. I was devastated financially; I almost considered killing myself. While most of my friends at that time deserted me without even giving me a call, except for Jack who had been my genuine friend since childhood, who offered me a financial support. Had it not been for his true friendship, I would have had ended my life then. This example demonstrates that a friend in need is a real friend.

By the same token, those who can provide you with emotional assistance are also true friends. At times, emotional care when you are in trouble is even more important than just lending you money. A few years back, I was in the middle of a divorce settlement with my former wife. Though it cost me a huge amount of money to settle the matter, what troubled me more was I still loved my wife and I could not bear being separated from her officially and permanently. I was completely depressed after the divorce. My friend Corrine was there in the right place and at the right time with me, consoling me, encouraging me, and inspiring me. Without her emotional support, I could not have survived the emotional turmoil then. This example illustrates the importance of selecting friends who can support you emotionally.

It is true that entertaining friends can give you a lot of benefits such as relieving your stresses and creating good memories, but at the end of the day if they do not help you when you are in deep trouble, they are not really your friends. First, friends who help you when you are in troubling situations are real friends; second, those who can provide you with emotional assistance are also true friends. For these reasons, I definitely choose friends who are kind enough to extend their assistance when you are financially or emotionally in trouble. This lends truth to the adage in my language that a friend in need is a friend indeed. (464 words)
