Usher Day 2

Usher Writing

In this quickly changing world, people are less happy than they were in the past.

Some argue that people in the past are less happy than they are today. Others contend that people are less happy than they were in the past. If asked, both groups would present compelling reasons to corroborate their stances. For the following reasons, I believe that people are less happy than they were in the past. First, today we have more competition; second, people’s expectations are higher.

First of all, today we have more competition. This is true in academic lives and also in job markets; people today have more difficulties getting into good universities and hitting good jobs. For example, when my grandfather was young, only a few high school graduates received education in college, whereas today the majority of students go to college, which really increases the competition among people in getting into good universities and hitting good jobs after graduation. According to my grandfather, he was not particularly intelligent, but as his family was relatively rich, the family was able to send him to college. As the result, he was able to find a good job as an engineer in a company easily. He said, “I did not study at all in high school and today no universities would accept me and no companies would hire me.” This example demonstrates that today we have more competition.

On top of that, people’s expectations are higher. This means people expect a lot more things materially and psychologically to consider themselves as happy persons. For example, my grandfather, when he married my grandmother, they did not have their own house; they rented a small old apartment with one bed room only. They did not have any electric appliances such as TV, microwave oven, washer, vacuum cleaner, and telephone. In spite of those poor living, my grandfather recalls he and his wife had a wonderful time. In contrast, people today never become satisfied even after having all those appliances and cars. Their appetite for materials seems to be endless; and it seems that people today are not satisfied. This illustrates that people’s expectations are higher.

Admittedly, some contend that people in the past are less happy than they are today, because people in the past had more difficulties such as shortage of food and wars. However, the bond among family members was stronger in those days despite such difficulties and therefore people were happier. First, today we have more competition; second, people’s expectations are higher. For these reasons, I believe that people are less happy than they were in the past. My grandfather always tells me that he had a lot of difficulties during the war, but nonetheless his life was much happier in those days than it is today. (449 words)
