Should participants of a project evaluated equally or individually?

Some argue that all students in a project should be evaluated equally; one of their compelling reasons to substantiate this contention is that teachers virtually cannot tell who contributed more or less to the project. However, this practice is not fair because typically the project leader puts more effort and some slackers contribute less to the project. In my opinion, participants of a project should be evaluated on an individual basis.

First of all, those who contributed more to a project should be rewarded accordingly. Typically, the group leader of the project spends more time and effort than the rest of the project members, and for this reason the leader should be given a better grade compared with other members. For example, last semester, I was the project leader of a science project. I planned the project, implemented an experiment, and reviewed the result, and prepared the project report pretty much all by myself. Although other members supported me to some extent, their contribution to the project was much less than mine. If all participants of this project received the same grade, I would be very upset, because I was the one who put more time and effort in the project.

Second, those who contributed less to a project should be graded accordingly. Every project has some slackers who do not contribute to the project. For example, in the same science project last semester, we had one particular person who did not do anything for the project. He was always late for the meetings; when a job was assigned to him, he never implemented the job at all; all he did was complaining about how the project was organized and accusing others of not helping him. In the real world, slackers like him would be demoted or even fired by his employer. Slackers in the project definitely should not be evaluated on equal footing with others who contributed more to the project.

In a nutshell, it is a fair and proper practice to evaluate students of a project team on an individual basis. Those who contributed more should be given higher grades, while those who were lazy in the project work should be evaluated accordingly. I believe this principle applies to the real world as well. This lends truth to the adage in my language that if you do not work, you do not eat. (389 words)

18 Living & Thinking II

It is important to know about events happening around the world that are not related to you.

Some argue that we do not need to pay attention to events happening around the world. One of their compelling reasons to substantiate this contention is that what is happening in the world is nothing to do with one’s personal lives. However, I disagree with this assertion; in my opinion, we should keep track of world events, because they sometimes impact our finance and health.

First of all, some transmittal diseases in a remote area of the world may spread rapidly to other parts of the world. Take an example of the bird’s flue pandemic happened recently in China. Once it was found in a small village in China, it spread to all corners of the world in a relatively short amount of time and killed hundreds of people. To this end, we should be aware of this kind of news, so that we can take preventive actions in my country and in my community to control the exponential spread of the pandemic. If we do not monitor the situation on a real time basis, we may end up with a large number of fatalities due to the pandemic.

Second, an event in one country may affect us financially. As the trend of globalization is expanding, a small outbreak of an event in one country may affect financial situations of other parts of the world. For example, about ten years ago, a small regional fighting in the Middle East stopped the influx of oil to my country. This increased the prices of oil dramatically, thus increased the prices of many other commodities related with oil. Being afraid of further future price increase of daily goods, some consumers bought large stock of daily items such as toilet papers and tissues. As a result, all the retail stores ran out of toilet papers. This is a very famous story in my country and is referred to as the toilet paper crisis. A small incidence in a remote area of the world actually has a significant bearing on our daily lives financially.

In a nutshell, it is crucial for us to keep track of events happening around the world, because they definitely affect our finance and health. Living in the world of globalization, we cannot afford not to pay any attention to events happening around the world. (373 words)

19 Culture & Lsisure II
The second reading of a book is more interesting than the first reading.

Some argue that reading the same book again is more interesting than the first time. One of their compelling reasons to substantiate this contention is that readers can always find something new when they read the book a second time. However, I disagree with this assertion; in my opinion, the first reading is always more interesting because one enjoys surprises and mysteries of the first reading and some books are not worthy of reading again.

First of all, readers enjoy thrills, mysteries, and inquisitive plots. If they already know the plot, they would not read the same book again. Readers of detective novels would not enjoy reading the same books again if they already knew the plot and who the villain was. For example, the other day, I was reading a detective novel of Sherlock Holmes. I read through a two third of the book and my friend suddenly disclosed the plot and who the villain was. My curiosity suddenly disappeared and I stopped reading the book at once, because for me it was no longer exciting to read something I already know. I would never think of reading the book again. Once the pot is known, the secret is no longer the secret, and there is no use of reading the same book again.

In addition, some books are not worthy of being read again. Cartoons and science fiction stories are those kinds of books that can be only enjoyed for the first time. I have read thousands of comic books in my life and I have never read the same comic books again, because I have so many other interesting comic books I want to read. Rereading the same comic books, to me, is a waste of time. As new comic books are issued every day, I have no time to linger on the same books; I would rather read other comic books.

In a nutshell, the first reading is always more interesting than the second reading because we enjoy surprises, mysteries, and thrills in the first reading. In addition, some books do not deserve reading a second time. Reading books is akin to dating a girl. We are attracted to the girl if she remains mysterious, but once we know who she is, we tend to lose interests in her. (384)
