Essay No.9
Students should have a part-time job while they are attending college. Agree or disagree?

Some contend that students should have part-time jobs while they are in school because they would allow them to earn money and to learn to be responsible and to communicate well with others. However, I believe that students should not have a part-time job because it would negatively affect their academic performance, the income from this type of job would be very low, and the job may have no relation to the student’s future career plans.

First of all, students attend college to study and obtain knowledge. Having a part-time job would not only reduce one’s study time, but would also harm one’s academic achievement. For example, one of my friends in college worked about 20 hours per week at a local restaurant, which significantly reduced his study hours; as a consequence, his GPA dropped and he lost a scholarship. While he earned some spending money from his job, he ended up losing far more in other ways. Had he not taken the part-time-job, he could have maintained both his GPA and his scholarship.

Second, most part-time jobs for students are minimum-wage jobs, and the income they would receive is not enough to risk harming his or her academic performance. If my memory serves me right, a typical minimum hourly wage in the U.S. is 8 dollars, while the average hourly wage of new college graduates is about 22 dollars. Therefore, it is more cost-effective to take out a student loan, earn a degree, and then get a decent-paying job that would allow one to pay back their loan. I strongly believe that students should focus on studying rather than earning meager wages.

Last but not least, a part-time job may have nothing to do with one’s future career plans. If a part-time job is closely related to one’s future career plan, it may provide a smooth transition into a future full-time career. However, if it is not related, there is not much one can learn from the job. For example, my sister worked in a coffee shop on campus, which had no correlation with her future plan to become a nurse, and I believe she should have studied more rather than work so many hours.

It is true that having a part-time job can teach students to be responsible and to work well with others, which are important factors for succeeding in the real world. However, as shown in the examples I have provided, I believe that students should stay away from part-time jobs and concentrate on studying instead.
