Essay No.9
Students should have a part-time job while they are attending college. Agree or disagree?

Some contend that students should have a part-time job because students can not only earn money but also can learn responsibilities and social skills. However, I believe that students should not have a part-time job in college because it negatively affects one’s academic performance, the income is very low, and the job may have no relations with one’s future career plan.

First of all, students attend college to study and obtain knowledge, not to do a part-time job. The part-time job would not only take away one’s study time but also deteriorate the academic achievement of students. For example, one of my friends in college worked about 20 hours per week at a local restaurant, which significantly reduced his study hours, dropped his GPA, and lost a scholarship; he ended up with losing more than he earned from the part-time job. Had he not taken the part-time-job, he could have maintained both his GPA and the scholarship.

Second, most of the part-time jobs for students are minimum-wage jobs, and it is not worth risking his or her academic performance. If my memory serves me right, a typical minimum hourly wage in the U.S. is 8 dollars, while the average hourly wage of newly graduates is 22 dollars. Therefore, it is more cost-effective to receive a student loan, have a degree, get a decent job and pay back the loan later. I strongly believe that students should focus on studying rather than earning meager wages.

Last but not least, a part-time job may have nothing to do with his or her future career plan. If the part-time job is closely related with one’s future career plan, it may provide a smooth transition to the future career. However, if it is not related, there is not much one can learn from the job. For example, my sister worked in a coffee shop on campus, which had no correlations with her future plan to become a nurse, and I believe she should have studied rather than working.

It is true that a part-time job can teach students accountabilities and team working, which are important factors for students to make a smooth transition to the real world. However, as shown in the examples I have provided, I believe that students should stay away from part-time jobs and concentrate on studying.
