Essay No.8

Which do you prefer: resolving a problem through emails and text messages or resolving it through phone calls and voice mails.

All people interact with other people every day. Therefore, it is inevitable that problems and conflicts occur. Some argue that resolving an issue in person or over the phone is better because they wish to express their feelings directly to the other party. On the other hand, I would rather resolve a problem through emails and text messages because a direct dialogue may aggravate the situation, and when sending a email, one can organize his or her thoughts more logically and keep records of the sent and received messages.

First of all, a direct dialogue with the other party by phone may only aggravate the situation. For example, the other day, my brother drank too much at a bar and punched an innocent guy who happened to be sitting next to him. The following day, my brother called that man to apologize, but unfortunately, the conversation got out of hand and resulted in name-calling and insults. Had my brother apologized politely in an email, the outcome might have been quite different.

Second, when writing an email or a text message, you can control your temper and organize your thoughts in a more logical way. For example, a few years ago, I went on a trip to Germany and was very disappointed by the services of the hotel receptionist. I complained to her directly, but I was so upset that I could not logically make myself understood. In retrospect, I should have written an email to both her and her supervisor. That way, I could have put more thought into the words I used and the way that I described the problem to make sure that they understood my point of view. It would have also allowed me to be calm and clear instead of reacting to the problem emotionally.

Last but not least, when you send an email or a text message and receive a reply or a notice that the message was received, at least you have a record of the correspondence between you and the other party. That way, if the issue becomes a bigger problem in the future, you can provide proof of what you said to the other party along with their replies. When you just make a phone call, there is no such evidence, and chances are that the other party may claim that you never said what you did or that you said something different.

In conclusion, as demonstrated by the examples I have provided, I believe that one should resolve a problem through emails or text messages rather than over the phone or in person. When both parties feel strongly about their point of view, it is particularly important to communicate in a clear, accurate way.
