Essay No.8

Which do you prefer: resolving a problem through emails and text messages or resolving it through phone calls and voice mails.

As there are many people interacting with one another in modern society, it is inevitable that problems between people do occur. Some argue that resolving an issue in person or through phone calls is better because they wish to express their feelings directly to the other party. On the other hand, I would rather resolve a problem through emails and text messages because a direct dialogue by phone call may aggravate the situation, and one can organize his or her thoughts more logically, and keep records of sending and receiving messages.

First of all, a direct dialogue with the other party by phone may only aggravate the situation. For example, the other day, my brother got intoxicated heavily in a bar and punched an innocent guy who happened to sit next to him. The following day, my brother made a phone call to apologize to this gentleman, but unfortunately this conversation escalated to another verbal battle and name-calling. Had my brother apologized politely through an email, the outcome might have been quite different.

Second, when writing an email or text message, one can control his or her temper and organize his or her thoughts in more logical ways. For example, a few years ago, I went on a trip to Germany and was very disappointed by the services of a hotel receptionist. I complained to her directly, but I was so upset that I could not logically make myself understood. In retrospect, I should have written an email describing the problem in more logical ways and forwarded it to her supervisor.

Last but not least, when you send an email or a text message and receive an acknowledgement, at least you have a physical record that you have sent the message to the other party. On the contrary, when you make a phone call, there is no such evidence and chances are the other party may claim that they never officially received your message.

In conclusion, as demonstrated by examples I have provided, I believe that one should resolve a problem through emails and text messages rather than phone calls. In particular, when both parties are emotionally involved, an email is the best means of communication.
