TOEFL essay No.5

People learn more by watching television than by reading books.
Agree or disagree?

Many people enjoy reading books because books contain detail information, and stimulate one’s imagination. However, in my opinion television has its advantages that outweigh those of reading books.

First, one advantage of television is that it provides real-time images and sounds which have more dramatic impact on our minds. For example, the largest earthquake in the Japanese history occurred off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, and television broadcasted real-time pictures of this tragic event 24 hours a day. TV broadcasted real-time pictures of houses and cars being engulfed by the Tsunami and showed us faces of people who were watching their houses and loved ones being drifted away in front of their eyes. Later many books and magazines were published on the tragedy, but it was weeks and months after the earthquake.

Second of all, TV offers exceptional educational programs. The History Channel, the Discovery Channel, the NOVA on PBS, for example, provide top quality educational programs for both adults and children. The other day, I watched a 30 minute program about the World War II on the History Channel. It was a short but concise summary of the war, explaining why it got started, how it evolved, and what were the final outcomes and consequences. It would take weeks of reading to obtain the same comprehensive information.

Last but not least, because of audio and visual effect of TV, one can learn how to play sports more effectively. For instance, I play golf but I always had problems hitting a ball out of a sand trap. The other day, I watched a gold lesson program on the Golf Network, in which Tiger Woods demonstrated how to rescue a ball from a sand trap. Tiger explained step by step how to hit one or two inches behind the ball and I felt like as if he was my personal golf coach.

It is true that reading books has its advantages such as stimulating your imagination and helping build up your vocabulary. However, unfortunately some people nowadays are too busy and tired to read books. In conclusion, I believe that television offers more than books because it provides information as it happens and it helps people learn science, history, and sports.
