Students should have a part-time job while they are attending college. Agree or disagree?

Some contend that students should have a part-time job, because students can not only earn some money but also can learn responsibilities and social skills. However, I am strongly convinced that students should not have a part-time job in college, because the part-time job negatively affects one’s academic performance, the income is unjustifiably low , and the job may have no relations with one’s future career plan.

Firstly, students attend college to study and obtain knowledge, not to do a part-time job. The part-time job would not only take away one’s study time but also deteriorate the academic achievement of students. For example, one of my friends in college worked about 20 hours per week at a local restaurant, which significantly reduced his study hours, lowered the GPA, resulted in losing a scholarship, and ended up with losing more than he earned from the part-time job. Had he not taken the part-time-job, he could have maintained both his GPA and the scholarship.

Second of all, excluding those qualitative benefits of a part-time job such as being able to learn responsibilities and social skills, the pure quantitative financial benefit from a part-time job may be so low that it may not fully justify the demerits of losing study time and deteriorating the academic performance. Most of part-time jobs for student are one of those minimum wage jobs. If my memory serves me right, a typical minimum hourly wage in the U.S. is 8 dollars, while the average hourly wage of newly graduates is 22 dollars. It is more cost effective to receive a student loan, have a degree, get a well paid job and pay back the loan later. I am definitely convinced that students should focus on studying rather than earning meager wages.

Last but not least, a part-time job may have nothing to do with his or her future career plan. If a part-time job is closely related with one’s future career plan, it may provide a smooth transition to the future career. However, if it is not related, as I stated above, there are no justifiable reasons to do a part-time job. For example, my sister worked in a coffee shop on campus, which had no correlations with her future plan to become a nurse, and I believe she should have studied rather than working.

It is true that a part-time job can teach students accountabilities and team working, which are important factors for students to make a smooth transition to the real world. However, as demonstrated above, the disadvantages of having a part-time job far outweigh the advantages, thus I am of the very strong opinion that students should stay away from part-time jobs and should concentrate on studying.
