TOEFL essay N0.5

People learn more by watching television than by reading books.
Agree or disagree?

Some learn by attending schools, some learn by using the mass media, including television, and others learn from books. Though each method has disadvantages as well as advantages, I am strongly convinced that learning by watching TV is the most effective of all, because TV can provide real-time information, save us time, and teach us how to play sports more effectively.

First, people can learn real-time information from TV. For example, on March 11, 2011, a big earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated the northeastern part of Japan. Television broadcasted real-time pictures and stories of this event 24 hours a day. Later many books were published on this tragedy, but it was weeks and months after the earthquake.

Second of all, TV can save us time. To be specific, the other day, I watched a 30 minute program regarding the World War II on the History Channel. It was a short but concise summary of the war, explaining why it got started, how it evolved, and what were the final outcomes and consequences. It would take weeks of reading to obtain the same comprehensive information.

Last but not least, because of audio and visual effect of TV, people can learn how to play sports more effectively. For instance, I play golf and I always have problems hitting a ball out of a sand trap. The other day, I watched a TV program in which Tiger Woods demonstrated how to rescue a ball from a sand trap. Several slow-motion clips with his narrations clearly explained me the basic skills of the sad trap shots. Since then, my golf score has been improved by at least two strokes.

It is true that reading books has its advantages such as stimulating your imagination and helping build up your vocabulary. However, unfortunately many people nowadays are so busy that they do not have enough time to read books. Watching TV has its advantages such as providing real-time stories, saving us time, and teaching us how to play sports more effectively, and for these reasons, I am firmly convinced that people learn more by watching television than by reading books.
