Set 2:
People can learn more by watching TV than by reading books.
Nowadays, one can learn from many sources such as TV, books, I-pods, CDs, etc. Although some people contend that one can learn more effectively from books, I firmly believe that we can learn more from watching the TV. This is because the combination of visual and audio information from the TV helps my understanding of a subject and because normally the TV presents a concept using simpler terminologies.
Firstly, I prefer watching TV when I learn a subject, because I am a better learner when I hear the information from the TV. For example, when I was a junior high school student, my teacher instructed us to read a passage and memorize the whole passage. I read the story ten times, but I could not memorize a sentence. I was not a reading person. Then, I listened to the tape of the story. Now, my cerebral cortex was fully simulated and I was able to memorize the whole passage after listening to the story just 5 times. Since then, I learned that I was a hearing person rather than reading person. If I had not learned this, I would have had a lot of troubles learning in subsequent academic activities in the high school and university.
Secondly, I prefer watching TV, because the words used in the TV are easier to understand. I do not know why, but usually professional writers tend to express their ideas using highly sophisticated terminologies. It seems as if they were never concerned about how difficult to read the material for most readers including me. For example, the other day, I was reading a book titled “Quantum Mechanics for beginners”. This book was supposed to explain the concept of the Quantum Mechanics, which is a very difficult concept to understand to begin with, in very easy-to-understand terminologies. However, after reading the first few pages, I gave up on reading this book, because it contained a series of highly technical words. Then, later, I watched a TV educational program hosted by the MIT. The professor explained this difficult concept in very easy-to-understand words and graphics. Finally, I thought I was able to grasp the concept of the Quantum Mechanics.
If had not watched the TV program, I would not have understood the concept for the rest of my life.
Some argue that one can learn from reading more effectively, because books include a lot of detail information. However, I disagree with this because the same amount of information can be learned from the TV. In conclusion, the combination of visual and audio information from the TV helps my understanding of a subject and because normally the TV presents a concept using simpler terminologies. For these reasons, I agree with the statement that we can learn more from watching the TV.
