The government should invest more money in children’s education than in college students. Agree or disagree?

How and where should a government allocate its limited education budget?
Some may argue that the government should invest more money in college students so that students can make a smooth transition to the society. However, I believe that the government should spend more money on education of children (ages 5 to18) because this is a critical period for children to develop healthy bodies and minds, more children than college students, and colleges have other financial sources.

First of all, the period between ages 5 and 18 is an important time for each child to develop a healthy body and mind. To develop a healthy body, enough money should be allocated to lunch and sports programs at school, so each child can eat and exercise properly. To promote a healthy mind, each child should be taught ethical values which form foundation for further development of each child. To be specific, when I was young, I had one class of ethical values every week and learned about how to become good citizens, helping those who cannot help themselves, being punctual, obeying laws and rules, responsibilities, honesty, integrity, caring, and so forth. These ethical values I learned during my childhood played an important role in my life thereafter, and for this reason the government should provide more financial support to children’s education.

Second, the number of children between ages 5 and 18 is at least 3 times the number of college students, considering the fact that not all high school graduates attend colleges. Furthermore, in my country, 80% of children attend public primary and secondary schools, while 40 % of students attend public universities and colleges. Accordingly, the government should allocate more money in children’s education.

Last but not least, most colleges have other financial sources such as donations from the alumni and private companies and revenues from the football, baseball, and other sports programs. For example, those universities that have very strong football programs receive millions of dollars by selling broadcasting rights of the football games to TV stations. In addition, those universities with strong science and engineering programs receive a significant amount of money from private companies for conducting joint research programs. Some universities actually are so successful financially that governmental subsidies are not needed.

In conclusion, as you can see from the examples I have provided, I believe that the government should invest more money in children’s education than in college students. The future of our country depends on these young children who have healthy bodies and strong ethical values.

TOEFL essay No.6

People in the past ate healthier food than people today.
Agree or disagree?

Because the average life expectancy today is higher than in the past, some argue that people today eat healthier food. However, I believe that people in the past consumed healthier food than people today because our ancestors ate organic foods without added chemicals and with less fat and sugar.

First, people who lived centuries ago consumed organic foods without added chemicals since substances such as artificial colors, preservatives, fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides were not available. In addition, transgenic plants that might adversely affect our health were not available. On the contrary, today it is almost impossible to find foods that do not contain these artificial ingredients.

Second, our ancestors consumed less fat. According to one study, an average adult that lived 100 years ago consumed 20 percent of his total calories from fat sources; in contrast, an average adult today consumed 35% of his total calories from fat. Less fat consumption has been linked to less people being overweight and a reduction in high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain forms of cancer. According to another study, the average weight of an adult male 100 years ago was 30 pounds less than that of an adult male today. In fact, the other day, my father showed me a photograph of our ancestors 100 years ago, and they all looked very skinny and healthy.

Last but not least, people in the past consumed less sugar. Our ancestors didn’t have access to the sodas or sugary coffee drinks that we have today, and sugar was very expensive. Therefore, they consumed much less than we do. Today, sugar is added to almost everything we eat, and it’s pretty hard to avoid. For example, my brother drinks 4 liters of Coca-Cola every day, and if my memory serves me right, one litter of Coca-Cola contains 110 grams of sugar, meaning 4 liters of Coke includes 440 grams of sugar. No wonder he weighs 250 pounds and suffers from diabetes!

In conclusion, the fact that the average life expectancy is much longer today than it was in the past is probably due to advanced medical treatment instead of diet. I believe that our ancestors ate healthier food than people today because their food was more organic and contained less fat and sugar.

Some argue that people today eat healthier food than people in the past because the average life expectancy today is longer. However, I believe that people in the past consumed healthier food than people today because our ancestors ate organic foods without chemicals, less fat, and less sugar.

First, people centuries ago partook of organic foods without chemicals because substances such as artificial colors, preservatives, fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides were not available in those days. In addition, transgenic plants that might adversely affect our health were not available in the past, either. On the contrary, today it is almost impossible to find foods that do not contain such artificial ingredients.

Second of all, our ancestors consumed less amount of fat. According to a study, an average adult 100 years ago obtained 20 percent of total calories from fat in contrast to 35% of total calories today. In contrast, sugar has made its way into almost everything we eat these days and it’s pretty hard to avoid. For example, my brother drinks 1 gallon of regular coke every day, and if my memory serves me right, a 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola contains 40 grams of sugar, meaning 1 gallons or 128 ounces of Coke includes approximately 425 grams of sugar. No wonder he weighs 250 pounds and suffers from diabetes.

Some argue that people today eat healthier food than people in the past because the average life expectancy is much longer today. However, this is not true, because the longer life expectancy is probably attributable to advanced medical treatment. In conclusion, I believe that our ancestors ate healthier food than people today because they partook of more organic foods with less fat and sugar.

TOEFL essay No.5 (after editing by a native speaker)

People learn more by watching television than by reading books.
Agree or disagree?

Many people enjoy reading books and believe that they can learn best this way because books contain detailed information and stimulate one’s imagination. However, in my opinion, one can learn much more from watching television than from reading books.

First, one advantage of television is that it provides real-time images and sound effects that have a more dramatic and lasting impact on our minds. For example, the largest earthquake in the Japanese history occurred off the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, and the television news stations broadcasted real-time pictures of this tragic event 24 hours a day. We saw video of houses and cars being engulfed by the Tsunami as it was happening, and we saw the faces of people as they watched their houses being engulfed by the water and their loved ones being pulled away in the current right in front of their eyes. Later, many books and magazines were published on the tragedy, but for current, up-to-date information about the tragedy, watching television was the best choice.

Second of all, TV offers exceptional educational programs. The History Channel, the Discovery Channel, and NOVA on PBS, for example, provide top-quality educational programs for both adults and children. The other day, I watched a 30-minute program about World War II on the History Channel. It was a short but concise summary of the war, explaining what caused it, how it evolved, and the final outcomes and consequences. It would have taken me weeks of reading to obtain the same amount of comprehensive information from books.

Last but not least, because of the audio and visual effect of TV, one can learn how to play sports more effectively. For instance, I play golf, but I have always had problems hitting a ball out of a sand trap. The other day, I watched a golf lesson program on the Golf Network in which Tiger Woods demonstrated how to rescue a ball from a sand trap. Tiger explained step by step how to hit one or two inches behind the ball, and I felt like as if he was my personal golf coach.

It is true that reading books stimulates your imagination and helps build up your vocabulary. However, unfortunately most people nowadays are too busy and tired to take the time to read and learn from books. In conclusion, I believe that television offers more than books because it provides current information and it helps people learn about science, history, and sports.

What was a good period in your life?
Hi.
My childhood in elementary school, grades 1 through 6 was definitely a good period in my life. I have two reasons to substantiate my assertion.

This was the only period in my life where I was completely free from academic pressures. All I did was playing games and sports with my friends. Every day I go home, drop off my school bag at the door and run off again to play with my friends. My favorite was playing baseball with my friends until it was too dark to see the ball. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.
------------------------------------------------------------------
When you have a problem, do you rely on others’ advice or your own ideas?

Hi.
I definitely rely on others’ advice. I have two reasons to corroborate my assertion.
First, others can analyze my problem more objectively. For example, when I have a problem, I may be emotionally involved, which may prevent me from making a right decision.

Second, others often have more experience than me. For example, my father often gives me advice. He is much older and has more experience than I have. I rely on his advice many times when I have problems.

For these reasons, I prefer to rely on others’ advice.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which period of your life was the most influential?

Hi.
The elementary school was the most influential period in my life. I have two reasons to substantiate my assertion.
First, this period made my body strong. For example, my elementary school was 6 miles from my house, so I had to walk everyday to my school. This really helped me build up my physical strength.

Second, this period made my mind strong. For example, in this period, I played baseball in a local club team. I learned discipline and teamwork.

For these reasons, the elementary school was the most influential period in my life.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which do you prefer to ask your professors questions in person or ask questions by email?

I definitely prefer to ask my professors questions in person. I have two reasons to corroborate my assertion.
First, I can get my questions answered instantly. If I ask a question by email, the professor may be busy and may not respond to my email promptly.
Second, I can ask follow-up questions. Usually, when I ask a question, I have many follow-up questions, so meeting with the professor in person is very helpful.

For these reasons, I prefer to meet my professors in person.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Essay 11

Should children help their families with household chores or should they study and play?

Many parents wonder if they should expect their kids to perform household chores. While some argue that children should perform household chores, others claim they should focus on studying and playing. After evaluating the pros and cons of both arguments,
I believe that children should perform chores for the three reasons provided below.

First, performing household chores teaches children that everyone should shoulder his or her share of duties at home. In most Japanese homes, women primarily take care of household chores, and some men do not participate at all in chores like cooking, cleaning, and washing dishes. As a matter of fact, when I was a little boy, I was not allowed to stay in the kitchen while my mother and grandmother were cooking. I want my children especially my boys to break this tradition, participate in the household chores, and learn that everyone should pitch in with tasks and do his part at home.

Second, children develop a sense of responsibility. For example, when I was a little boy, my duty was taking out the garbage at specific times of the day and on specific days of the week. On a hot summer day, I got the days mixed up, and forgot to take out the garbage, and as a result, the family had to put up with the terrible rotten odors coming from the garbage. Everyone in my family complained about this, my mom, my sisters, and even my dogs barked at me. I learned an important lesson and since then I had never repeated the same mistake.

Last but not least, children learn how to earn and manage money. Whether children should be rewarded with money is debatable, but in my family when I completed a chore, my mom gave me a dollar as a reward, and she also told me to save 10% of my earning. It was great to go to the bank with my mom and see the new balance on my savings account. To this day, 10% of every paycheck is saved no matter how tight our budget is.

Some maintain that young children should not perform chores because they are already busy with school work, sport club activities, piano lessons, etc.; however, this is not entirely true because simple chores such as doing dishes, taking out the trash, and walking the dog do not take a long time. In conclusion, as seen in the examples I have provided, the advantages of performing household chores far outweigh the disadvantages; therefore, I believe that children should perform household chores. Particularly, I strongly encourage boys to perform household chores so that they will support their spouses when they get married in the future.

Essay No.10

People should buy products made in their country even if the price is higher.
Agree or disagree?

With the advancement of economic globalization, a significant number of reasonably priced imported items such as electric appliances from China, bananas from the Philippines, and pumpkin from Mexico, are available in our market. While some argue that consumers should take advantage of the lower prices of imported goods, others claim that one should only purchase locally produced goods to support the local economy. I am fully convinced that people should buy products made in their country even if the price is higher, because buying local products helps the local economy, improves the global environment, and because local foods taste better.

First, buying local products obviously helps the local economy. For example, my father works for a Japanese automotive company, Honda, and my families and relatives always purchase Honda cars although the prices are often 20% higher than equivalent Korean or Chinese cars, because we know that buying Hondas helps not only his company but also hundreds of subcontracting suppliers, and eventually supports the local economy.

Second of all, purchasing local products is an environmentally friendly practice. Imported items travel long distances; if my memory serves me right, the average banana travels 2000 miles from farm to table, and the average pumpkin, 4000 miles. This implies that imported items are more heavily packaged to protect them from physical damages during transportation and that more fuel is required for transportation. Buying local minimizes the air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions created when producing packaging materials and transporting the goods.

Last not but least, locally grown vegetables and fruits taste better because they are fully ripen when harvested, while imported fruits are harvested young, so that they do not get damaged during transportation. For example, last summer I visited a friend in Thailand and tasted a fully matured mango from a tree of his garden; it tasted ten times better than imported mangoes.

Some maintain that consumers should purchase imported goods because of lower prices; however, I refute this statement because it will not support the local economy. As you can see form the examples I have provided, I am of the very strong opinion that one should purchase goods produced domestically rather than those manufactured elsewhere.(Score 6)
