【LAM】100 100 100 98
【RAM】100 94 100 100 100

Small company or large company?

While some people prefer to work with large companies, others prefer to work for small companies. I recognize some benefits of working for a small company. For example, you have more personal interactions with other employees including the top management, which goes a long way to build your royalty and dedication to the company. In addition, as the number of employees is limited, you do not get lost in the crowd and you do not feel you are just a number, which may increase your motivation. However, when comparing the pros and cons of both big and small corporations, my contention is that I should be employed by a large company.

For starters, big corporations generally offer higher salaries and better fringe benefits such as health insurances, paid holidays, and pension programs. Furthermore, big companies usually have better health and social facilities such as hospitals, schools, and summer vacation houses. For instance, Tata Steel is one of the largest steel companies in the world, and its main manufacturing plant is situated in a city called Jamshedpour, where virtually everything, housing, roads, hospitals, schools, you name it, is owned and administered by Tata Steel.

Second of all, big companies have extensive training programs to hone your skills and improve your professional expertise. To be specific, my company annually sends approximately twenty employees to top MBA programs around the glove. Moreover, last year three of our employees were accepted to the Harvard Business School, which is one the most prestigious MBA programs in the world.

Last but not least, many big companies have plants and offices around the world, so you may have chances working in foreign countries, which may broaden your perspectives. For example, my brother had an opportunity to work in the Chicago office for five years, and not only he but also his family totally enjoyed this eye-opening experience. In fact, he enjoyed the life in Chicago so much that he is thinking about moving to Chicago after the retirement.

While some people prefer to work with large companies, others prefer to work for small corporations. In conclusion, my belief is that big companies offer more than small corporations do. However, if you are young ambitious entrepreneurs and want to follow the path of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Patrick Page, this debate is of no use. Start your own businesses to realize your American dreams. (400 words/Score 6)

A good teacher is a strict teacher.

Some people think that a good teacher is a strict teacher. I admit that being strict is an important attribute of a teacher, because teachers need to discipline students. However, I am convinced that there are more important requirements to be a good teacher.

For starters, a good teacher should not be a policeman. In my high school, I had one particular PE teacher, who was an extremely strict and authoritative person. He behaved like a policeman and all he was concerned about was to make students comply with the rules and standards. He treated us like potential criminals. I wished he had trusted us and encouraged us to be good students.

Second of all, a good teacher should not be a violent person. In my grade school, I had another PE teacher, who happened to be the coach of my volleyball team. He was a very violent person. Nowadays, physical punishment is prohibited at school. However, in those days, slapping students in the face was a routine practice among teachers. My team mates were all good students, studying hard and practicing volleyball hard. One day the team lost a match in a competition. After the game, this coach slapped all of us in the face. How could a teacher hit all those innocent students for just one loss of a volleyball game?

Last but not least, a good teacher should be a caring person. When I was in high school, my English teacher, Mr. Miller, was a supportive and caring person. I participated in an English public speaking competition. Mr. Miller helped me to prepare a speech, listened to my delivery many times, and made valuable suggestions to improve. If it had not been for his assistance, I could not have won the first prize in the competition.

Some people think that a good teacher is a strict teacher, but I am convinced that there are more critical attributes than just being strict, as stated above. In particular, I would like to emphasize that a good teacher should be a caring person. If it had not been for the assistance of my caring teachers, I could not have achieved my success. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Computers have complicated people's lives.

Some people think that computer have complicated people’s lives. I partially agree with this statement, because if one computer system of a bank inadvertently fails, millions of people may be affected. However, I am convinced that the advantages of computers far outweigh the disadvantages. I will present three reasons to support my contention.

For starters, computers can save people money. To be specific, a computer based mathematical modeling can simulate how a car will deform upon hitting another car or wall. Researchers no longer need need to physically crush cars. According to an automobile magazine, Toyota used to crash about 300 cars per year for various impact tests. Today, because of this advanced computer modeling, they crash only 50 cars to meet the regulatory requirements. This brings significant monetary savings.

Second of all, computers can save people time. I am a nuclear engineer. When I was an undergraduate student, one of the assignments was to calculate how many grams of uranium were required to initiate a spontaneous nuclear chain reaction. It took me two days to solve this problem using my hand calculator. Now I have a computer program to calculate the critical mass of uranium, and it takes a mere ten seconds.

Last but not least, computers can facilitate communication among people. My job requires me to travel extensively. I used to spend a significant amount of money on making phone calls to my family and friends. Now, thanks to Skype, it costs me nothing. In addition, many business meetings with foreign clients can be held through the internet, so that we do not have to travel to other countries.

While some people think that computers have complicated people’s lives, my contention is that computers have made people’s lives easy , because the advantages of computers far exceed their disadvantages, as explained above. In particular, the computer based communication networks have significantly contributed to the success of the global economy. Computers in the future will make our lives even easier and what will transpire is beyond our imagination. (339 words/Score 6)

One of your friends is nervous about his or her work. What advice would you give your friend?

Hi.
When my friend is nervous about her work, I would tell he to practice hard before the work. For example, my friend was very nervous about an upcoming presentation to the top management. I advised her to practice the presentation at least 10 times before the meeting. In addition, I told her to prepare answers to those anticipated questions from the top management. She followed my advices and successfully completed her presentation.

In summary, practice makes you less nervous.

Should children receive money or not for doing household chores?

Hi.
I am convinced that children should receive money for doing household chores.
I will present one good reason to substantiate my assertion.

This payment will teach children how to manage money.
When I was young, I received 10 dollars a week and I had to save 10% in my savings account. It was great to go to the bank with my mom and see the new balance on the account. To this day, 10% of every paycheck is saved(, no matter how tight our budget is.)

For this reason, I am convinced that children should receive money for doing household chores.
Thanks for listening. Have a great day.

How do you feel you could improve the quality of your work?

Hi.
I am convinced that less working hours will improve the quality of my work.

I am employed by a Japanese manufacturing company. Up until 5 years ago, I worked over 100 hours per week. I thought this was normal as most of my colleges did the same. However, this took a toll on my mental and physical health. Now I work much less hours, which significantly improved the quality of my work. Besides, I am mentally and physically healthy.

For this reason, I am convinced that less working hours will improve the quality of my work.

What are the necessary factors to having a good school?

I am convinced that supportive teachers and a good library are two important factors to a good school.

First, a good school must have caring and supportive teachers. To illustrate, Mr. Hashimoto, my English teacher in high school, was a very caring teacher. Thanks to his assistance, I won the first prize in a speech competition.

Secondly, a good school must have a good library. To be specific, the library of my university was open 24hours a day and 7 days a week. I virtually lived in the library for 6 months to write my master thesis.

In summary, supportive teachers and a good library are two important factors to a good school.

Parents are the best teachers for children. Agree or disagree?

Hi.
I am convinced that parents are the best teachers for children. I will present two reasons to substantiate my assertion.

First, it was my parents who taught me how to crawl, how to stand, how to walk and how to speak. Therefore, I have to agree that they were my best teachers in my childhood.
Secondly, my parents taught me many practical things. For example, my father taught me how to fix a flat tire, while my mother toughed me how to bake my favorite apple pies.

For these reasons, I am definitely convinced that my parents are the best teachers for me.
Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

What was the best aspect of the last school you attended?

The best aspect of my last school was operating a nuclear reactor.

I have a BS in the nuclear engineering. My university had a small experimental nuclear reactor. While I hated those theoretical nuclear physics courses, I really enjoyed one course to operate this reactor. As I pulled out the control rods, the reactor reached criticality and started the nuclear chain reaction. It was such an exciting experience to me.

Therefore, the best aspect of my last school was operating the nuclear reactor.

What do you believe that schools in your country need to do in order to improve?
Hello.
I believe universities in my country need to have libraries open 24 hours a day and 7days a week.

I have an engineering degree from a university in the US. My university had a library open 24 hours a day and 7days a week during the entire semester. This helped me tremendously, because in the last semester I had to write a thesis. I virtually lived in the library for 3 months to complete my thesis.

Therefore, I believe universities in my country need to have libraries open 24 hours a day and 7days a week.
Thank you very much for listening.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Parents need to spend more time with their children.

I am convinced that parents need to spend more time with their children.
I will present one good reason to substantiate my assertion.

According to a survey, on average, parents spend 49 minutes with their children every day.
This is attributed to parents who have to work long hours to make ends meet.
Children need to feel that they are unconditionally loved by their parents. In 49 minutes per day, though it is difficult to convey such love.

Therefore, I am convinced that parents need to spend more time with their children.
Thank you very much for listening.

Parents should be involved in deciding where their children go to college.

Hi.
I am convinced that parents should be involved in deciding where their children go to college.
I have one good reason to substantiate my assertion.

Assuming that parents pay all tuition and expenses, they should be involved in the decision-making.
My wife and I asked my daughter to attend a local state university, as we could not afford to send her to a private school. We explained our financial situations to her, and she accepted our proposal.

For this reason, I am convinced that parents should be involved in deciding where their children go to college.

TOEFL Writing Independent

It has been said, “Not everything that is learned is contained in books.” Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?

本文:
Some people think knowledge gained from experience is more important than knowledge gained from books. Others think knowledge gained from books is more important than knowledge gained from experience. If asked, both groups will provide logical reasons to support their stance. I personally think knowledge gained from experience is more important than knowledge gained from books.

Some people think that A
Others think that B.
If asked, both groups will provide logical reasons to substantiate their assertions.
I am personally convinced that A is more important than B.

First, gaining knowledge from books is easier than gaining knowledge from experience. For example, I was on the tennis team when I was a high school student. The team had only one tennis court even though the team consisted of more than sixty students. In addition, I could not practice tennis when it was rain because the tennis court was outside. Therefore, I could not train or practice tennis enough. By contrast, I decided to buy several books about tennis skills. This was easy way to learn about tennis because I could buy books in a minute and read the books even when it was rain. As a result, I could learn skills of forehand, backhand, and serve and volley from the books. As this example illustrates, gaining knowledge from books is easier than gaining knowledge from experience.

Body1:
First, TS(topic sentence) 1.
For example, In addition, Therefore, because, As a result,
As this example illustrates, TS 1.

On the other hand, knowledge from experience is more practical than knowledge from books. For instance, when I was a junior at the University of Tokyo, a well-known university in Japan, I studied English to study abroad. At first, I read English newspaper and Wall Street Journal to build my vocabulary in a local library. In addition, I read books about grammar or how to write essays. However, I could not improve my English at all. Then I went to a university in New York for two years to study English and finance. In classes, I had to use English to discuss case studies and write reports about international finance. After I came back to Japan, I realized my English skills were dramatically improved. As the experience above shows, knowledge from experience is more practical than knowledge from books.

Body 2:
On the other hand、TS 2.
For instance, At first, In addition, Then,
As the experience above shows, でTS 2を繰り返す。

Moreover, knowledge from experience makes people learn deeper than knowledge from books. Two years ago, I worked for Ishikawa Prefecture, a rural area in Japan. Before I went there, I knew the problem of disparity between Tokyo and rural areas in Japan by reading books. However, when I went to Ishikawa Prefecture, I was surprised with the real, serious situation. Ishikawa Prefecture was suffering with serious problems such as aged people, old public institutions, and high rate of suicide. I could not imagine such serious problems until I went to Ishikawa Prefecture. As this experience demonstrates, knowledge from experience makes people learn deeper than knowledge from books.

Body3:
Moreover, TS3
As this experience demonstrates, TS3.

While some people think knowledge gained from experience is more important than knowledge gained from books, others think knowledge gained from books is more important than knowledge gained from experience. First, gaining knowledge from books is easier than gaining knowledge from experience. On the other hand, knowledge from experience is more practical than knowledge from books. Moreover, knowledge from experience makes people learn deeper than knowledge from books. For the above reasons, I strongly believe knowledge gained from experience is more important than knowledge gained from books.

結論:
While some people think that A, others think B.
First, TS1. On the other hand, TS2. Moreover, TS3.
For the above reasons, I am firmly convinced that A is more important than B.

(As this exmaple illustrates, demonstrates, shows)のがとても良い。

Test 5

Which food would you recommend to a visitor to your country?

I definitely recommend TOFU or bean curd to my friends from abroad.
I will present two reasons to substantiate my assertion.

First, TOFU is a healthy food. As Tofu is made from soybeans, it is a low calorie and high protein diet, containing no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

Secondly, there are many kinds of TOFU dishes. In summer, chilled TOFU is very popular among Japanese people. (A glass of beer with chilled TOFU is the best combination.) In winter, TOFU in hot water is my favorite.

For these reasons, I highly recommend TOFU.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which do you prefer, playing sports for enjoyment or competition?

I prefer to play sports for enjoyment (rather than for competition).
I will present two reasons to corroborate my contention.

First, I do not like too much emphasis on winning
I used to play volleyball in high school. Our coach was a very severe person and he always pushed us to win. When we lost a game, he scolded us and slapped our faces. I never liked his attitude.

Secondly, I need time to relax. As I have enough competition in my work place, I do not need another competition when I play sports. I play sports to relieve stresses.

For these reasons, I prefer to play sports for enjoyment (rather than for competition).
---------------------------------------------------------------
What is a food that many visitors to your country enjoy having?

If you are a beef connoisseur, I strongly recommend a Kobe beef stake.

The meat is so tender that it will melt on your tongue.
Each cow drinks Japanese beer and receives a massage treatment everyday while listening to a relaxing music. These special cares contribute to the tenderness unmatched by any other beef in the globe.
Although the price is a little intimidating, it is well worth every penny spent.
For this reason, I strongly recommend Kobe beef stake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Which ethnic food do you enjoy eating?

I enjoy eating Japanese TOFU or bean curd.

What is more important for an athlete, physical ability or effort?

I am convinced that genetics, or physical ability is more important for an athlete.

For example, long distance running is (by far) dominated by Kenyans and they hold many world records. A heavy muscular Scandinavian person, although training would make him a pretty good runner, would never beat a slender kenyan athlete. (Likewise, a slender Kenyan person is unlikely to become an Olympic heavy lifting champion.) Training would definitely improve the performance, but genetics play more dominant role over training.

For this reason, in my opinion, physical ability is more important for an athlete.

Which do you prefer, team sports or individual sports?

I am convinced that I prefer to play team sports rather than individual sports.
I will present two reasons to substantiate my assertion.

First, you can learn social skills. To be in a team, you need to know how to keep a healthy relationship with other teammates. Team sports will surely help you acquire social skills that are going to help you throughout your life.

Secondly, team sports are more fun. Twice a week, I participate in the company’s volleyball club. We basically crack jokes and have fun. (After one-hour practice, I am completely recuperated.)

For these reasons, I prefer to play team sports rather than individual sports.
