Test 11

What is the best way for parents to raise healthy children?

Hi.
The best way for parents to raise healthy children is letting children to play sports. Sports will help kids to become strong persons physically and mentally. To be specific, when I was young, I participated in playing baseball and Karate. First of all, these sports helped me build up my healthy body. In addition, I became mentally strong and patient. I learned to hang in there when I or my team is losing.

For this reason, I think the best way for parents to raise healthy kids is letting them participate in sports.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Construct a new building or preserve an old one?
Hi.
Unless the building is a historically important building, I believe we should construct a new building to meet the latest seismic requirements.

On March 11, 2011, a big earthquake hit the northeastern part of Japan. While many old buildings collapsed and killed so many people, new buildings that satisfied the latest seismic requirements did not collapse. Although the subsequent Tsunami devastated everything, the new buildings at least withstood the impact of the earthquake.

For this reason, I prefer to build a new building rather than preserving one.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.

What is the most necessary factor for living a healthy life?

Losing weight is the most important factor for living a healthy life.

My weight once was over 250 pounds. I had all kinds of health problems. High blood pressure, high cholesterol level, and I was diabetic. My doctor told me “If you do not lose your weigh, you will become blind and I have to amputate your legs.

I went through a vigorous diet and exercise program and lost 50 pounds. Now I have no serious health problems. My blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels are all normal, and I feel great.

For this reason, losing weight is the most important factor for living a healthy life.
----------------------------------------------------------

What aspect of your life do you need to change the most?

I definitely need to lose my weight. I weigh currently 250 pounds. I have all kinds of health problems. High blood pressure, high cholesterol level, and I am diabetic. My doctor told me “If you do not lose your weigh, you will become blind and I have to amputate your legs.”

I need to go through a vigorous diet and exercise program and lose at least 50 pounds. Otherwise, sooner or later, I will die from a heart disease or a stroke

So, losing weight is what I need to do.
Thanks for listening to my depressing story.
------------------------------------------------------
Agree or disagree?
There are not enough national parks in my country.

I agree with this statement. We should have more national parks in my country Brazil to protect the Amazon Rainforest. Since 1970, over 232,000 square miles of the Amazon rainforest has been destroyed. A large number of native Amazon people lost their homes. Thousands of plant and animal species were lost. In addition, deforestation means less oxygen generation form the forest.

For this reason, we should have more national parks to protect the Amazon rainforest.
----------------------------------------------------------

Houses or apartment buildings?

I prefer to live in an apartment, because the purchase price and electric bill are much cheaper.

First, the purchase price of an apartment is much cheaper than buying a house in a big city. I would have to pay two times the money if I purchased a house in the same neighborhood.
Second, the electric bill is much cheaper. My three-bed room apartment is so energy efficient that my electric bill is as low as 100 dollars per month, while my friend living in a three-bed room house pays 200 dollars per month.

For this reason, I prefer to stay in an apartment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Test 12

What is most important item among all of those that you use?

My cell phone is the most important item.

First, I need to communicate closely with my family.
My job requires me to travel extensively. Thanks to my cell phone, I can talk to my family and send text messages anytime and anywhere.

Second, my cell phone is extremely useful in emergency situations, The other day I was caught in a traffic jam and had to change my flight reservation. With my cell phone, I was able to change the reservation so easily.

For these reasons, my cell phone is the most important item.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Is it important to learn about your ancestors’ history?

It is not important for me to learn about my ancestors.
I was adopted by my foster parents when I was 3 years old. My foster parents and grandparents took care of me so well that I have never asked who my real parents and grandparents are. Actually, I do not have to learn about my ancestors, because they are my real parents and grandparents.

For this reason, for me it is not interesting to learn about my ancestors.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
What is your favorite possession?

My favorite possession is my Kindle e-book reader.

The Kindle e-book reader can store hundreds of books. It has a long battery life, so I can read books no matter where I go. It is as if I had my personal library with me wherever I go. Many e-books are reasonably priced, often one dollar per book. In addition, this device can read the text to me, so that I can just listen to the story.

For these reason, my favorite possession is my Kindle e-book reader.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
What is your next major item you are planning to purchase?
Hi.
I want to purchase a Toyota Prius, a hybrid car.

It has a great gas mileage of 50 miles per gallon. I drive my old Ford pick-up truck to my work which is approximately 50 miles from my house. The gas mileage of this old car is less than 10 miles per gallon. This means, if my brain calculation serves me correct, I can save 8 gallons per day, which is equivalent to 30 dollars a day. I can take my wife to a fancy dinner every weekend. I am sure she will love it.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Young people are uninterested in history these days.

I agree with this statement, because young people do not care about history.
I personally do not care about history, either. History was my least favorite subject in high school. I hated to memorize all those historical events, places, and years. (Particularly, I hated to memorize the names of all the presidents.) I guess it was partly the teacher's fault. All they did was writing all those historical information on the backboard and instructed us to memorize. If they had presented history in more thought-provoking manner, I would have had more interests in history.

Test 10

What was a recent story you heard or read on the news, and why was it interesting?
Hi.
I read an article about a soccer ball washed away by the Japanese Tsunami and found on a small island of Alaska. It is a miracle.

First, the ball travelled over 4000 miles across the Pacific Ocean.
Second, a man in this Island found the ball.
Thirdly, his Japanese wife was able to read Japanese characters on the ball.

This ball has been returned to the owner, a 16-year-old boy living in the Tsunami devastated area. The boy was so happy to see the ball again.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.
---------------------------------------------------------------
When you travel, do you spend most of your time on one spot or visit many places?

I prefer to stay in one place rather than visiting many places.
I will present two reasons to support my assertion.
First, I do not enjoy sightseeing. To be specific, when I go on a trip, I will stay at one place just to relax. If I visit many places, I get tired.
Second, it is cheaper to stay in one place. For example, when I traveled to Thailand, I stay at a resort and it did not cost a lot of money. In contrast, my friend visited many places and he spent twice as much money.

For these reasons, I prefer to stay in one place rather than visiting many places.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.

I love to read stories about new scientific discoveries.
For example, the other day I read a story about a Japanese satellite called Hayabusa.

This satellite was launched in 2003. The plan was to travel to an asteroid, grab a sample, and return to the earth in 2007. On its return home, it experienced many technical glitches. But each time a problem arose, the scientists managed to find an excellent solution. Finally it came home in 2011.
What is an amazing story.

------------------------------------------------

Do you travel to places that you have been to before or new places?

I prefer to travel to places that I have been to rather than new places.

I like to visit the same place, because I know for sure I can relax and enjoy. If I go to some places I never visited before, chances are I do not enjoy the visit. To be specific, every year I visit Kawai island Hawaii. It has many beautiful beaches, not crowded, and I always have a wonderful time there. Last year, however, I went to an island in the Philippines for the first time. The place was dirty, crowded, and I was so disappointed.
For this reason, I prefer to visit places that I have been to.

While non-smokers think that smoking should be banned in all public places and office buildings, smokers and some business owners think that smoking should be allowed in all public places and office buildings. When it comes to the issue of second smoke or passive smoking, the disadvantages of smoking clearly exceed the advantages of smoking. As a non-smoker, I am strongly convinced that smoking should be banned in all public places and private office buildings.

First of all, second hand smoke or passive smoking is taking a toll of non-smokers. Every year, fifty four thousands non-smokers die due to the passive smoking in America. Thousands of infants die due to clot death caused by second hand smoke, that is, a sudden and unexpected death of apparently healthy babies during sleep. For instance, a few years ago, my aunt, who never smoked a single cigarette in her life, died of lung cancer, apparently due to second hand smoke from her husband. It is fair for smokers to pay the consequences of smoking, because they chose to smoke and understood the risk associated with smoking. On the other hand, it is absolutely not fair for non-smokers to die due to second hand smoke.

Second of all, second hand smoke makes our foods smoky, make our clothes smelly, and cause us headaches. For example, the other day, my family had a dinner at a local restaurant, where they had both smoking section and non-smoking section. The problem was that there was no physical separation between the two sections, so that smoke from the smoking section drifted into the non-smoking section. First, the smoke spoiled the taste of our foods. Then, our clothes smelled like ash trays. To make the matter worse, it caused my brother a severe headache, which ruined our family night.

Last but not least, banning smoking at public buildings will reduce the death toll due to second hand smoke and will decrease the total medical costs, which may allow those who do not have medical insurances to have ones. Given that those fifty four thousand non-smokers do not have die due to second hand smoke, the financial savings of banning smoking at public buildings are so enormous that possibly all those who do not have medical insurances today may afford having ones.

In summary, while non-smokers agree that smoking should be banned in all public places and office buildings, business owners of bars and restaurants think otherwise, because banning smoking will reduce their income. However, considering the negative impact on our health due to second hand smoke, undoubtedly I am convinced that smoking should be banned in all public places and office buildings. Whereas each smoker has a right to smoke, each non-smoker has a right to live in a smoke free environment.

Small company or large company?

While some people prefer to work with large companies, others prefer to work for small companies. I recognize some benefits of working for a small company. For example, you have more personal interactions with other employees including the top management, which goes a long way to build your royalty and dedication to the company. In addition, as the number of employees is limited, you do not get lost in the crowd and you do not feel you are just a number, which may increase your motivation. However, when comparing the pros and cons of both big and small corporations, my contention is that I should be employed by a large company.

For starters, big corporations generally offer higher salaries and better fringe benefits such as health insurances, paid holidays, and pension programs. Furthermore, big companies usually have better health and social facilities such as hospitals, schools, and summer vacation houses. For instance, Tata Steel is one of the largest steel companies in the world, and its main manufacturing plant is situated in a city called Jamshedpour, where virtually everything, housing, roads, hospitals, schools, you name it, is owned and administered by Tata Steel.

Second of all, big companies have extensive training programs to hone your skills and improve your professional expertise. To be specific, my company annually sends approximately twenty employees to top MBA programs around the glove. Moreover, last year three of our employees were accepted to the Harvard Business School, which is one the most prestigious MBA programs in the world.

Last but not least, many big companies have plants and offices around the world, so you may have chances working in foreign countries, which may broaden your perspectives. For example, my brother had an opportunity to work in the Chicago office for five years, and not only he but also his family totally enjoyed this eye-opening experience. In fact, he enjoyed the life in Chicago so much that he is thinking about moving to Chicago after the retirement.

While some people prefer to work with large companies, others prefer to work for small corporations. In conclusion, my belief is that big companies offer more than small corporations do. However, if you are young ambitious entrepreneurs and want to follow the path of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or Patrick Page, this debate is of no use. Start your own businesses to realize your American dreams. (400 words/Score 6)

A good teacher is a strict teacher.

Some people think that a good teacher is a strict teacher. I admit that being strict is an important attribute of a teacher, because teachers need to discipline students. However, I am convinced that there are more important requirements to be a good teacher.

For starters, a good teacher should not be a policeman. In my high school, I had one particular PE teacher, who was an extremely strict and authoritative person. He behaved like a policeman and all he was concerned about was to make students comply with the rules and standards. He treated us like potential criminals. I wished he had trusted us and encouraged us to be good students.

Second of all, a good teacher should not be a violent person. In my grade school, I had another PE teacher, who happened to be the coach of my volleyball team. He was a very violent person. Nowadays, physical punishment is prohibited at school. However, in those days, slapping students in the face was a routine practice among teachers. My team mates were all good students, studying hard and practicing volleyball hard. One day the team lost a match in a competition. After the game, this coach slapped all of us in the face. How could a teacher hit all those innocent students for just one loss of a volleyball game?

Last but not least, a good teacher should be a caring person. When I was in high school, my English teacher, Mr. Miller, was a supportive and caring person. I participated in an English public speaking competition. Mr. Miller helped me to prepare a speech, listened to my delivery many times, and made valuable suggestions to improve. If it had not been for his assistance, I could not have won the first prize in the competition.

Some people think that a good teacher is a strict teacher, but I am convinced that there are more critical attributes than just being strict, as stated above. In particular, I would like to emphasize that a good teacher should be a caring person. If it had not been for the assistance of my caring teachers, I could not have achieved my success. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Computers have complicated people's lives.

Some people think that computer have complicated people’s lives. I partially agree with this statement, because if one computer system of a bank inadvertently fails, millions of people may be affected. However, I am convinced that the advantages of computers far outweigh the disadvantages. I will present three reasons to support my contention.

For starters, computers can save people money. To be specific, a computer based mathematical modeling can simulate how a car will deform upon hitting another car or wall. Researchers no longer need need to physically crush cars. According to an automobile magazine, Toyota used to crash about 300 cars per year for various impact tests. Today, because of this advanced computer modeling, they crash only 50 cars to meet the regulatory requirements. This brings significant monetary savings.

Second of all, computers can save people time. I am a nuclear engineer. When I was an undergraduate student, one of the assignments was to calculate how many grams of uranium were required to initiate a spontaneous nuclear chain reaction. It took me two days to solve this problem using my hand calculator. Now I have a computer program to calculate the critical mass of uranium, and it takes a mere ten seconds.

Last but not least, computers can facilitate communication among people. My job requires me to travel extensively. I used to spend a significant amount of money on making phone calls to my family and friends. Now, thanks to Skype, it costs me nothing. In addition, many business meetings with foreign clients can be held through the internet, so that we do not have to travel to other countries.

While some people think that computers have complicated people’s lives, my contention is that computers have made people’s lives easy , because the advantages of computers far exceed their disadvantages, as explained above. In particular, the computer based communication networks have significantly contributed to the success of the global economy. Computers in the future will make our lives even easier and what will transpire is beyond our imagination. (339 words/Score 6)

Looking back on my school days, my learning was primarily based on reading books. I admit that I learned a great deal from books. Particularly, when it comes to literature and history, books are main sources of information. However, I am convinced that learning from experience offers more benefits than learning from books. I will present three reasons to corroborate my assertion.

For starters, when you make a mistake, it often is so painful that you will most probably never do it again. When you read a story that someone made a mistake, however, it will give you a warning that you should not make the same mistake. As it never hurt you physically or mentally, the chance is that you may end up repeating the same mistake. For example, I used to be an avid stock trader. Five years ago, I lost half a million dollars in one week. I had to sell my house and almost got a divorce. This experience was so painful that I will never be involved in stock trading again. Had I learned from a book, I would definitely repeated not have learned from the mistake.

Second of all, when you play a sport, you can only learn from experience. For example, you can learn how to play tennis only by hitting balls. You can learn the rules associated with the game of tennis, but you will never learn how to hit tennis balls, unless you actually practice hitting balls with your partner.

Last but not least, you can learn more practical knowledge from experience. I am a civil engineer. After college, I was employed by a local construction company and assigned to a building project. I learned ten times more knowledge from this experience than reading those engineering books at college. I particularly leaned the importance of communicating with people including workers, colleagues, and my bosses.

In conclusion, for the reasons stated above, I believe that the advantages of learning from experience far exceed those of learning from books. I strongly recommend students practice what they learned from books. Experience will expand their perspectives. (352 words) e-rator=5

Test 9
Why is it good for a person to take a year off before entering college?

Hi.
I am convinced that a person should take a year off before entering college.
I will present one good reason to substantiate this assertion.

Before entering college, I visited about 40 different countries, mostly underdeveloped nations in Asia and Africa. I met many children who could not go to school because of the war and the poverty. This experience totally changed my attitude. When I entered a college, I felt how fortunate I was and I was strongly motivated to study.

For this reason, I am convinced that a person should take a year off before entering college.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Do you prefer to take easy courses or difficult courses?

Hi.
I am convinced that I prefer to take difficult courses.
I will present one good reason to substantiate my assertion.
I have an engineering degree from an American University. As I was a foreign student, my tuition was 7000 dollars per semester. My goal was to learn. I wanted to get my money’s worth out of college. I took many difficult courses. Though my GPA had to suffer a little bit, it was well worth each and every penny spent.

For this reason, I am convinced that I prefer to take difficult courses.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.

What would you like to do in your free time?

Hi.
As my job requires me to travel extensively, when I am home, I want to help my wife and kids as much as possible.
I do most of house chores including cleaning, laundry, shopping groceries, helping kid’s homework, you name it.
My wife loves my help. Besides, these chores release my stresses.

So, I want to spend quality time with my family in my free time..

Thanks for listening and have a great day.

Which would you prefer to take, an art class or a music class?
Hi.
I prefer to take a music class.
I will present two reasons to substantiate my assertion.

First, I like singing. In high school, I belonged to a chorus club and our group won the first prize in a local competition.

Secondly, I enjoy listening to classical music. Particularly, my favorite piece is Hungarian Rhapsodies No.12 in C sharp minor composed by Franz Liszt, a Hungarian pianist and composer. This piece is so relaxing that I feel completely rejuvenated after listening to this piece.

For these reasons, I prefer to take a music class.
Thanks for listening and have a great day.

It is a waste of time for university students to take courses in subjects other than their majors. Agree or disagree?

Hi.
I am convinced that students should not take courses in subjects other than their majors. I will present one good reason to substantiate my assertion.

I have an engineering degree. To graduate, I had to take many courses such as literature, art, and history, which had nothing to do with my major. As I had no interests in such subjects, I was completely bored in the classes. To be honest, it was a waste of time. I should have taken more interesting subjects such as astronomy, biology, and geology, which are more closely related with my major.

Thanks for listening and have a great day.
